Are you a Blood donor?
Thread started after reading madeeasy's account of his child's ordeal...

Apparently numbers are falling - Especially with under 30s.

I do on a regular basis. Am I a life saver? I suppose in a non-direct kinda way... A hero? Well I dunno possibly...

I started cos my old man told me to! He said... You'll never know when you'll need it... Good point well made.

Let me guess, dicksie...you're a father to young kids.

Dicksie doesn't hold babies.

Some sort of principle he has.

used to do it regularly. Confess to stopping as I have small veins and last time it really hurt when they didn't do it properly. that was the one time in about 50 that it hurt but figured it was someone else's go.
think it should be compulsory for the young and healthy. Good on you for publicising.

I used to in England, but when I moved to Stralia they wouldn't let me as I was in the UK when 'mad cows' happened.

Yeah, I've given blood about ten times before but haven't done so for a few years now...

Should probably start again at some point but I'm so fatigued after work, and I try to do things most evenings now, that it's hard to find the time now...

It's the vegetarian diet that does it. Lacks IRON!

They take 470 ml or 0.82 pint.

I used to give blood, but in all honesty, I don't see any advertising, nothing through the door ... so over the years, I have forgotten to do it.

For some reason autocorrect wants nhs to be msg.

Yng

Special packaging and documents might very well be available to nhs staff going about their job. But all the help I was being offered by the msg was to draw my blood into a tube. No further practical assistance than that.

Extensive research on the internet, discussion with my GP du jour and nurse specialists at the Royal Free and Royal Marsden, only yielded the following advice: "You can't send it via RM (no mention of any special packaging and documents that would be available to a private individual) so you could just lie about what's in the parcel". It's surprising how many quacks and nurses told me to just risk it.

I used to give blood, but due to my Arse disease no longer can. I do take blood though as part of my job. Nothing better then finding a big vein.

Oh and nursey you can send claret in the post in Uk, if using proper packaging and documents, not strictly against the law, but Ireland is problematic, had loads of issues.

Blood, Platelets, Stem Cells, all needed and greatfully received. Not so sure about Fecal transplants yet.

Re: Are you a Blood donor?
They all use the same phrases for example when the big needle goes in they always say sharp scratch.

During an appointment they first of all do a small test I believe this is to check for Iron levels (no problem for us eh) they take a small blood samples from your finger.

Once a nurse checked my form then said small prick as she was doing my iron levels - I thought blimey it hasn't got that on there has it ?!

Eat plenty of cayenne pepper for low blood pressure.

Re: Are you a Blood donor?
WHOic - injections and having a small blood sample taken don't adversely affect me, but donating blood (nearly a pint, apparently) makes me go wobbly for a minute or so. Naturally, i don't actually faint because I am a WARRIOR, but the world goes a bit black at the edges and dizzifying and I have to chug water before getting up again. I was told it's because I have low blood pressure.
